Goober
and the Peas never made it to the Elbo Room on Jan. 2, like they were supposed
to. But don't blame artistic temperament for their no-show. Here's how their new
year started off: Two hours after they left their hometown of Detroit, their
21-year-old van died. No problem. A quick call to a friend and the band was able
to scrounge up a new mini-van. By then, an ice storm was well under way. They
got as far as Michigan before Goober, who was manning the wheel, lost control of
the car and slammed into a guardrail. The musicians were spared, although their
tour manager suffered whiplash and a concussion, and the van was totalled.
They're hoping for better luck when they try to get to Chicago again, this time
for a s how at 10 p.m. tomorrow at the Elbo Room, 2871 N. Lincoln
(312-559-1212). Their arsenal of hillbilly rock songs includes "Hunt for
Grandpa" and "Hot Women (Cold Beer)"; $8.
